Redirects (301 and 302)

Server responses that send visitors and crawlers from one URL to another — permanent (301, 308) or temporary (302, 307).

A permanent redirect tells search engines the old URL has moved for good, so its signals consolidate on the new one; it is the standard for migrations and merged pages. A temporary redirect suggests the original URL will return, so search engines may keep showing it.

Chains of several redirects slow crawling and users; point old URLs straight at their final destination.
